The charming comedy with the unusual name, Living Room Coffin, opens in wide release today on Amazon Direct Video, and will be available on iTunes and GooglePlay later this month.
Living Room Coffin stars Jennifer Prediger (Apartment Troubles, Red Flag, Infinity Baby) as Iris, an introverted 9-1-1 operator, whose life is turned upside down when an empty coffin is delivered to her house by two dimwitted UPS workers (Linas Phillips, Rainbow Time, Manson Family Vacation, and Johnny Pemberton, Ant-Man, 21 Jump Street). At first, Iris thinks the coffin is a misguided gift from her ex-boyfriend, Seth (Blake Berris, Breaking Bad, Highway). But when Seth offers credible deniability, Iris makes it her mission to find out who sent her the coffin and what it means. Berris's still-smitten ex-boyfriend and Rémy Bennett (The Wolf of Wall Street, Newly Single) as Iris's tactless but well-meaning best friend both offer satirical foils to Iris's focused seriousness. Cameos by Mark Boone Jr. (Sons of Anarchy, Birth of a Nation) and Richard Riehle (The Man from Earth), add subtle hilarity to Iris's postal odyssey.
"When I began to write the script for Living Room Coffin," says first-time feature director Michael Sarrow, "I took out my trusty pad of Post-Its, and stuck a quote to my computer: If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you. – Oscar Wilde.
"I wanted to make a film where the hero could truly explore and confront her own mortality. So in the proud tradition of absurdist theatre, I decided comedy would be the way to go. The surreal premise infused the story with a mix of vaudevillian broad comedy, fast-paced banter, and existentialist themes, heavily influenced by Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Tom Stoppard."
Living Room Coffin has yet to be reviewed, but Sarrow's short film, This is Lipstick! won the Spirit of Independence award at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. According to Variety's Peter Debruge in a review of Uncle Kent, lead actress Jennifer Prediger "has the makings of an indie star."
Leomark Studios, distributor and worldwide sales agent for Living Room Coffin, is a Los Angeles-based film production and distribution company with a catalogue of more than 200 titles. Recent Leomark releases include Harold Buttleman: Daredevil Stuntman, starring Oscar nominee and SAG award winner John Hawkes (The Sessions, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Anita Barone (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Karen Black (Easy Rider).
