Actress/Producer Maylin Castro and Actress Hiroko Tanaka McHenry are friends who wanted to “create a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers and cultivate a supportive community in the process,” says Castro. As a result, the duo co-founded Filmomaniac in 2014 with the collaboration of Matthew Rush, the owner of Subject L.E.S. who allowed Filmomaniac to use the space.
Rush described the showcase as a “good time,” and stated that he enjoys “being able to give artistic people a venue to show their movies and serve the community in the process.”
“Filmomaniac has been successful,”
The shorts scheduled for the evening are as follows:
· “Escape from Garden Grove,” Mathilde G. Dratwa - Director
· “Somewhere I’m Not,” Rachel Pearl - Producer
· “Anniversary,”
· “Our Quiet Night,” Lisann Valentin - Director
· “Bombshell,”
· “Derailing,”
Although Castro admits that curating short films each month is a lot of work with no financial reward, they get creative karma in return: “we’ve developed a community of people around us that encourage one another and when you put that kind of energy out into the world, you get it back tenfold.”
Now in its second year, Filmomaniac launches the 2015 Season on Sunday, February 15th at 7:00pm, at Subject L.E.S. 188 Suffolk Street, New York, New York 10002. Free admission.
